This Fall, EMPAC presents a full schedule of performances, screenings, installations, festivals, and talks in which funk meets Futurism, vacation days are documented and dissected, hip hop hits the theater stage and Andy Warhol’s film Sleep becomes the backdrop for a slumber party.
Following the resounding success of our first year in the new building, the upcoming events build off that momentum while continuing to push expectations.
Whether there is an event happening or not, EMPAC is the place to be. With ongoing public installations and exhibits set up on the mezzanine, within the 360° screen and hidden off the beaten path, you will be able to discover new works created here by artists in residence.
It all starts off with Contact Ensemble’s Elevated on Thursday September 3, an evening of music by composer David Lang, accompanying (or accompanied by) a film by a major visual artist. Next up is the Japanese noise / percussive psychedelic group Boredoms with Atlanta’s ambient punk band Deerhunter on Friday September 11. The latter is the premiere of the New Nothing series, which tackles the (age-old) complaint that there is nothing new happening in music, all while in a physically transformed concert hall.
New to EMPAC this Fall is the presentation of exhibitions and installations throughout the building on an ongoing basis. Both of the installations on view this fall have been produced by artists in conjunction with an EMPAC residency. Please join us for the opening receptions where you will have the opportunity to discuss the work with the artists in person.

In response to the (age-old) complaint that there’s nothing new happening in music, EMPAC modestly announces New Nothing, a series of concerts featuring national and international musicians working in the hybridized terrain of experimental-leaning popular music. These groups exemplify a global reality in which music hasn’t just crossed borders but made them irrelevant. Popular music will never be the same.
09/11 — Boredoms: BOADRUM 9 plus DEERHUNTER
11/13 — Skeleton$ & Luciano Chessa
Unfiction is series of documentary films that turn truth into something other than fact, using poetry and imagination, rather than transparency and objectivity. These filmmakers question the very notion of authenticity, and disobey the typical documentary filmmaking practices; instead they stage their own realities on location, employing techniques such as reenactment, personal voice-overs and special effects.
12/10 — Encounters at the End of the World
10/24 — RMA Fall Concert
Featuring: Percussion Ensemble, Symphonic Band, and Symphony Orchestra.
11/18 — Piano x 2 x 4
Compositions for two and four pianos featuring performances by Max Canaday, Lucia Chang, Catherine Chou, Joseph Gibney, Gina Liang, Angelina Lou, Greg Pitner, Garrett Smelcer, and Andre Watson with faculty advisor Michael Century.
