Continuing her explorations into sound and frequency, artist Sabisha Friedberg presents this work in progress investigating the relationships of levitation, suspension, and low-end thresholds. A new work in progress created as an artist-in-residence, Friedberg will actualize these ideas as a combination of performance, sculpture, and light-box cinema.

Born in Johannesburg South Africa, Sabisha Friedberg studied Fine Arts and completed her Bachelors degree with a focus on sound and installation in the New Genres Department of The San Francisco Art Institute. There she studied experimental film with Ernie Gehr and recording and electro-acoustic/ tape music composition with Don Lloyd, Paul de Marinas and Chris Brown of Mills College of Contemporary Music. A semester was spent with Terry Fox in Liege sharing thoughts, drawings, absurdities. She received her Masters of Fine Arts degree in Music/Sound from the Milton Avery Graduate Arts Program at Bard College in 2013 where she studied with David Behrman, Richard Teitelbaum, Anthony Coleman and Miya Masoaka.

Commissioned by the Villa Noailles in Hyères, she composed a series of sound pieces, which are part of the permanent exhibition. Also in 2012, she was invited to perform a solo live electro-acoustique work for the Ministère de la culture of France which took place as a solo presentation in the Palais Royale arcade and garden in Paris. She was Artist and Residence at The Clocktower Gallery with Director Alanna Heiss 2012, founder of PS1. She composed a live radio piece for AIR (Art International Radio)/ Clocktower Gallery New York) entitled The Starry Garter: A Certain Point Within A Sphere. She is the recipient of the New York State Council on the Arts/ Transmission Arts Grant for 2012.

In Dec 2012/Jan 13 she exhibited a one-man show at AVA (Audio Visual Arts) in New York entitled Levitation that featured works related to her investigations of the Arcane and sub-sonic as well as drawings and scores. As part of the Soundworks exhibition of 2012 at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London, Sabisha contributed her work Sevenfold, A Coherence. Also for The Clocktower/ AIR she presented a experimental chamber piece entitled Interstice, a composition for voice and acoustic instruments presented in November of 2013.

The Hant Variance, a series of recordings made while in residence at EMPAC with Peter Edwards 2013 is to be pressed as a limited vinyl edition as released in 2014 as a collaborative label production between EMPAC and ISSUE Project Room. Sabisha has been the Artist-in-Residence of 2013 at ISSUE Project Room, New York. She presented a live work in April entitled Hinterkante, Resonanz: Hoffe Axiom, which featured the world acclaimed basso profundo Kevin Maynor and in November, a three day piece entitled In (the limbs) of Letters, Not the Bellows, a live reading of texts and performance of compositions by the artist at devised sound stations within the venue.

Sabisha has performed and presented installations widely in Western and Eastern Europe, Russia, Japan, and Northern America. Sabisha will be Artist in Residence at EMPAC (Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center) in 2014. She is currently based in Paris and Brooklyn.
