The Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC) is one of the major initiatives of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York. With EMPAC, Rensselaer is reaffirming its commitment to the continuous challenge and change of cultural paradigms. EMPAC will build bridges between the vanguards of art, science and engineering, be a platform for new interdisciplinary practices and create, produce and present new experiences for new audiences. The scope of EMPAC is unique in academic and non-academic communities, its program is challenging for those who are responsible for it as well as for those who will participate in EMPAC’s manifold activities. Events, commissions and lectures began in 2004, to ramp up awareness of the exceptional facility slated for an October 2008 opening. The current phase after the opening positions EMPAC as a major force on campus as well as in the Capital Region, nationally and internationally.
