Frieze Film is a program of five new artist films co-commissioned by Frieze Foundation and the Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The films will subsequently be screened on Channel 4 television in the UK to coincide with Frieze London. The artists commissioned to make film-based works for Frieze Film 2013 are: Petra Cortright, Peter Gidal, Patricia Lennox-Boyd, Oraib Toukan, and Erika Vogt. This year’s newly commissioned works include a range of approaches, from the non-illusionist Structural/Materialist film of Gidal to the more freeform approach of Cortright. As a whole, the program looks to interrogate broadcast as medium. The participating artists will benefit from a production residency at EMPAC. The work that is made during the residency period will be broadcast on Channel 4 television and screened at Frieze London and at EMPAC in Troy, New York.

EMPAC

The Curtis R. Priem Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center—is where the arts, sciences, and technology interact with and influence each other by using the same facilities, technologies, and by breathing the same air. Situated on the campus of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, EMPAC is dedicated to building bridges between our human senses, to modes of perception and experience, to creating meaning in a physical environment, and to the intangible world of digital technology. Four discrete venues are designed with unique technical infrastructure to enable audiences to see, hear, and move in space in endlessly different ways. EMPAC hosts artists and researchers to create new work and presents events which ask audiences to join the quest for new perspectives. EMPAC 2013-2014 presentations, residencies, and commissions are made possible by continuous support from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with additional support from the Jaffe Fund for Experimental Media and Performing Arts, with further support by the National Endowment for the Arts – Art Works, the National Dance Project of the New England Foundation for the Arts with funding from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Community Connections Fund of MetLife Foundation, the New York State Council for the Arts, and the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation.
