EMPAC artist Marina Rosenfeld was recently announced as a featured artist in the 15th Gwangju Biennale, taking place September 7 through December 1, 2024, in Gwangju, South Korea. Rosenfeld’s project for the biennial is a co-commission between Gwangju Biennale and EMPAC / the Curtis R. Priem Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

This new co-commission in time-based visual arts is part of EMPAC programming from curator Katherine C.M. Adams. μ (mu) is supported across a series of EMPAC residencies that began in January 2024.

This edition of the Gwangju Biennale, Asia’s oldest biennial of contemporary art and one of its most high-profile art events, gathers 73 artists from 30 countries under the theme Pansori, a soundscape of the 21st century. Directed by curator Nicolas Bourriaud, the exhibition is co-organized by curators Barbara Lagié, Kuralai Abdukhalikova, and Sophia Park, and with assistant curators Jade Barget and Euna Lee.

Marina Rosenfeld’s commissioned new work, titled μ (mu), is grounded in the material conditions of dub plates’ inscriptions. Rather than use the dubplate to play encoded music, μ (mu) uses its microscopic regions to generate a unique audiovisual world that engages the unruly origins of sound.

The work will be presented in South Korea for the exhibition, and an iteration will show as part of EMPAC’s programming later in the fall 2024 season, announcement forthcoming.
