Improv Spaces
Improv Spaces serves as a hub in the Saratoga/Capital region and provide resources for new music with a community of interdisciplinary collaborators. They seek to introduce the practice of improvisation to the general public through site-specific work with live performance, virtual interdisciplinary jams, digital projects, animations, and performative workshops. Founded by Alex Chang and Adam Forman, Improv Spaces has co-created frameworks among collaborators that permit interdisciplinary improvisation based on themes, sounds, textures, moods—an open dialogue across fields, perpetuating a potentiality of what can be and not what’s expected.
Rock City Falls Trio (Alex Chang, harp; Jason Handron, double bass; and, Adam Forman, drums) is an improvising ensemble that integrates jazz language, classical technique, experimental sound practices, and an indie-influenced atmospheric aesthetic to create a hybrid musical voice. The trio’s work moves fluidly between composed structures and open improvisation, emphasizing collaborative listening, textural exploration, and cross-genre expression.
Sun Dogs is the sci-fi jazz duo of Dominique Vuvan and Adam Tinkle, like-minded sonic explorers who have long probed the outer reaches of music—Vuvan as a psychologist who studies the neuroscience of music, and Tinkle as a multi-instrumentalist and multimedia artist who studied with the likes of Alvin Lucier, Anthony Braxton, and Anthony Davis. In the post-lockdown DIY renaissance of 2021, they began co-hosting a house concert series called ESP/Evoked Potentials, and it was at one of these house concerts that Sun Dogs recorded its debut album, The Solstice Concert: a semi-improvisational suite of soundscapes, harmonic territories, and synthesizer textures where hypnotic moon bells and spaceship sounds undergird the spirited test flights of flute, clarinet, and saxophone and interpenetrate with Tinkle’s space-time-fractured field recordings.
