Micaela Tobin
Filipino American composer and sound artist Micaela Tobin integrates her soprano voice with electronics, ritualized gesture, and amplified object symbolism to weave dynamic music in the experimental and contemporary realms of opera and noise.
As White Boy Scream, Micaela dissects operatic and extended vocal techniques through hardware to create extreme textures of noise, drone, and choral sound walls. Of her album BAKUNAWA (Deathbomb Arc), The New Yorker says, “Opera would do well to pay attention.”
Micaela presented her cinematic debut at REDCAT in 2021 and premiered her second opera in 2023 at Zorthian Ranch. She performed the principal role of Coyote in the critically acclaimed Sweet Land (dir. Yuval Sharon & Canuppa Luger; Comp. Raven Chacon & Du Yun). Micaela received a 2021 MAP Fund grant, a 2022 NPN Creation & Development Fund grant, a 2024 Civitella Ranieri Fellowship, and a 2025-2027 Tulsa Artist Fellowship.
